Eyeglasses Instead of Contacts During Cold
Owing to the change of weather, Catherine got a bad cold recently. The situation turned better after she took some medicine, but she still found that her eyes were always full of tears and became red and swollen. At first, she thought that may be the eye fatigue resulting from her heavy work, so she didn鈥檛 pay much attention to that. However, after two days or so, the eyes became more swollen than before, and they are painful.
The above is told by Catherine herself. One more point should be noticed that Catherine has suffered from myopia for many years and she always wears contact lenses. Maybe you will feel confused since Catherine only had a bad cold, how could myopia relate to cold? As a matter of fact, her condition is none of myopia鈥檚 business but contact lenses鈥.eyeglasses
When the eye conditions turned worse, Catherine went to the hospital. According to what she told the doctors, she has worn contact lenses for about two years, and she pays enough attention to the eye care in her daily life, for instance, she would take them off to have them cleared every night. During her cold, she felt that tears always running, the eyes were both red and swollen. After the doctor鈥檚 eye examination, based on the disease history and the examination result, the doctor confirmed that Catherina has suffered from viral keratitis which is caused by the cold virus. This is infected when Catherine kept cleaning her running nose and used her hand to cover the mouth when she was going to sneeze.
Eye experts explain, since the change of weather, more and more people have a cold, and at the same time, the number of people who come to hospital for eyes is climbing. Many eye diseases are infected by wearing contact lenses, and some cases may result from the wrong choice of medicine so that the disease condition becomes worse. There is a great deal of virus on the hands during a cold, and the virus could be easily transported to the eyes so as to contaminate the cornea by the actions of putting on or taking off contact lenses. When a fever occurs, part of the resistant ability of the eyes declines and less tears excrete, so that a large quantity of virus reproduce and the metabolites deposit between the cornea and the lenses which may make the oxygen permeability of the contact lenses reduce. This is easy to cause eye disease.
Therefore, eye experts suggest that if you get a cold or fever, you鈥檇 better wear a pair of eyeglasses instead of contact lenses.
